Environmental Restoration & Habitat Compensation

U.S. Air Force, Oklahoma
Steve completed a wetland habitat analysis and determined baseline habitat suitability for the snapping turtle, redheaded woodpecker, and wood duck in a 13-acre wetland. The Air Force proposed to fill the wetland to reduce the hazard of bird-aircraft strikes. The results of the baseline habitat analysis were used to guide the design and construction of a compensatory wetland, and monitor the development of new wetland habitat.

The Nature Conservancy, Oregon
Steve contributed to the restoration of a former oxbow and wetland complex adjacent to Upper Klamath Lake and the Williamson River. He completed a predictive ecological risk assessment to determine whether DDE and DDT detected in surface soils at the site could pose unacceptable risks to aquatic biota and food chain, especially the endangered Lost River sucker (Deltistes luxatus) and the shortnose sucker (Chasmistes brevirostris). The assessment recommended the removal of several pesticide hot spots that posed unacceptable risk to sensitive species.
